About Us

WE SELL GERMAN BOOKS FOR KIDS

My husband and I came from Germany to the United States in 2000. For the first years, we have been living in Columbus, OH, where our daughter was born in 2002. End of 2003, we moved to Atlanta, GA, where our son was born in 2004 and our second daughter was born in 2007. With all of our kids, we did and still speak mainly German at home – certainly except if we have visitors over that don’t speak the language. This was based on the recommendation of our pediatrician, as well as from books about how to raise bi-lingual kids. Otherwise, we found out, it would become a problem for them to speak perfect German later in their life. Nobody was concerned about perfect English, since they are exposed to it anyway most of the time from a particular age on through preschool, kindergarten, school, etc.

As most kids, our kids like it if we read books to them, throughout the day, before they go to bed, and so on. To stick to the rule of trying to speak mainly German at home, as well as to show the also written German, we started to purchase books in Germany when we were back there for visits. In addition, we asked our relatives who came visiting us to bring German books with them. But soon, we found out that this has a couple of disadvantages: Sometimes, the times between visits, and hence the wait for “fresh” books, could be quite long. This was especially dissatisfying if we got a particular book recommended and wanted to have it as soon as possible. Furthermore, it was not always that convenient for people bringing books with them, since depending on the number, the weight of the luggage could get up quite significantly. And last but not least: Friends that came to know about it asked us increasingly for a favor to get books for them as well.

This was the moment when the idea of Germankiddibooks was born: A small, private business that sells German books for kids in the United States. The interest was small in the beginning and grew quickly according to the number of people that heard about us. These are families that want to expose their kids to the German language – because one or both of the parents are Germans, or just because they like the language and want to give their kids a chance to learn it. Based on our experience, there is no doubt that a child can easily learn at least two languages from the very beginning on. And books are an excellent way to support and so-to-speak “institutionalize” this.

We look forward to having you as a customer – either on an ongoing basis, since we provided you already with books in the past, or as a new one who will become part of our customer network. And we would certainly be glad about a chance to meet us in person, e.g., at a garage sales that we do from time to time; or at a special event, such as Christmas markets; or at a meeting of a German group, such as the Atlanta German’s Girls Night-Out; or at least through a phone call. Why is that? Since our customers are also our friends and we have a lot to share: Our passion for kids, our passion for culture, our passion for languages – and our passion for friendship!

Best regards - Herzliche Gruesse,
